The Primitive Brain

The Primitive brain in humans is what we will call the combination of The Reptilian Brain and Mammalian Brain, characterized by being both impulsive and automatic.

Reptilian Brain

  • Inner most part of brain

  • Oldest

  • Most primitive

  • Maintains body functions required to sustain life

  • The root of aggression

  • “Fight or flight”

Mammalian Brain

  • Next evolution after the Reptilian Brain

  • Mammal gained the ability to experience feelings about events

  • Awareness of self in relation to environment

  • Hippocampus and amygdala

  • Less controlled by instinct
