Healthy vs. Unhealthy Anger
Healthy Anger
- Situation appropriate
- NOT used to punish, hurt, retaliate, intimidate, control or manipulate others
- Verbalize, discuss, LET GO!
- NOT repressed or ignored
- Feelings and opinions expressed CALMLY!
Example of healthy anger:
- Using words to express our feelings like, “Your statement makes me angry because….” or “I feel angry when you….”
Unhealthy Anger
- Intention of punishing, hurting, revenge or something destructive
- Anger is experienced Intensely
- Screaming, yelling, physical expressions of anger, violence, threats, sulking, manipulation, emotional blackmail, passive-aggressiveness or the silent treatment
- Repression and explosion
Example of unhealthy anger:
- Putting someone down or being verbally abusive, fighting, hitting/kicking, punishing, or being destructive to self or other in some way.
