Healthy vs. Unhealthy Anger

Healthy Anger

  • Situation appropriate
  • NOT used to punish, hurt, retaliate, intimidate, control or manipulate others
  • Verbalize, discuss, LET GO!
  • NOT repressed or ignored
  • Feelings and opinions expressed CALMLY!

Example of healthy anger:

  • Using words to express our feelings like, “Your statement makes me angry because….” or “I feel angry when you….”

Unhealthy Anger

  • Intention of punishing, hurting, revenge or something destructive
  • Anger is experienced Intensely
  • Screaming, yelling, physical expressions of anger, violence, threats, sulking, manipulation, emotional blackmail, passive-aggressiveness or the silent treatment
  • Repression and explosion

Example of unhealthy anger:

  • Putting someone down or being verbally abusive, fighting, hitting/kicking, punishing, or being destructive to self or other in some way.
